All Democractic Candidates Support FMLA Coverage for Same Sex Domestic Partners
The Human Rights Campaign recently released results of the response of all major Democratic candidates on a number of issues addressing gay rights. Candidate's Biden, Clinton, Dodd, Edwards, Kucinich, Obama, and Richardson uniformly agreed that same-sex domestic partners and their children should be covered by the FMLA. The candidates also unanimously agreed that the federal government should support a state's legal recognition of same-sex couples for purposes of federal benefits. Combined, the two positions would eviscerate the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Under the DOMA, only heterosexual marriages are recognized for purposes of the federal benefits, including FMLA leave.
